Despite a late start to their season due to city rules limiting field use until mid-May, and even though a number of players were new to the game of soccer, our girls junior varsity soccer team won the championship game against the previously undefeated Longfields team on June 3. Congratulations to all the girls, and to Megan Buss and Rachel Oueis who scored our goals. Redeemer's Athletics Director, Michael Laliberte, said "Goalkeeper Corrin Harbers made two outstanding saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless, including stopping a penalty kick." We can be proud of our girls who are now the NCSSAA Tier 2 Champions!

2010 graduate Matthias Bowles spent this past summer with his head in the clouds...literally. It all started five years ago when Matt joined Air Cadets. "I liked the idea of flying someday, and there's a history with the Airforce on my Dad's side of the family. Once I completed Ground School through Air Cadets on Saturday mornings, I was qualified to apply for the Air Cadet Pilot Scholarship Program." Fortunately for Matt, he was accepted into the prestigious program and so he spent most of the summer stationed at St. Honoré, Quebec, near Chicoutami. "Along with spending half of each day in the classroom, we had many opportunities to fly," said Matt. "Over my seven weeks in the program, I logged 115 take offs and landings." When asked what his most exciting flight was, he thought it was either his longest flight - a three and a half hour trip to Lac St. Jean, complete with two stops at airports along the way, or it may have been his two hour solo flight to Grand Bergeron near the St. Lawrence. "The whole program was a great experience. It was worth every minute of stress and hard work. Flying completely changes the way I look at the world." Matt officially received his pilot's 'wings' at a formal graduation ceremony on August 15, and because he has completed all his formal training and has done more than five take offs and landings, he can now officially take passengers for a ride.
Like all high schools, Redeemer provides opportunities for students to work in an environment that interests them, while earning credits toward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Grade 11 student Beckie Manouchehri took advantage of our co-op program to see if she really did want to pursue a career as a veterinarian. "I've always wanted to be a veterinarian, ever since the age of four" said Beckie. "I completed my co-op hours at an animal hospital which was a fifteen minute walk from my house. I worked afternoons and some evenings at the clinic." Staff at the animal clinic started Beckie off with some of the more menial tasks, like mopping, stocking shelves, tidying the consult and surgery rooms, filing and sweeping. But as she earned their trust, Beckie graduated to more interesting tasks, including learning how to properly sterilize surgical equipment. "I was also allowed to observe and assist with appointments, including retrieving vaccines, restraining animals while blood tests were being taken, and even filling up needles with the correct amount of injection fluid." Beckie recommends other students try a co-op placement. "Co-op was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Take the opportunity while you can and you might just find your calling!"
