Support Services

The following support services are available to students enrolled at Redeemer:

1.  Guidance Program:
The guidance and career education program is a vital and integral part of secondary school.  Through this program, students will acquire the knowledge and skills that they need in order to set and pursue education and career goals, to learn about the gifts and talents that God has given them, and to carry out their Christian responsibilities.  The program will be delivered through various means, including classroom instruction, completion of an annual education plan, career exploration activities, and individual and short-term counselling.

2.  Library: The library is available to students throughout the whole school day and resources can be checked out.  Seven computers are available to students for school work, and our library provides a quiet area for students to concentrate.

3.  English as a Second Language (ESL):
Redeemer offers our International Students a series of ESL courses for credit as well as language support services. ESL students may take up to 3 ESL courses in lieu of compulsory English credits.  They must, however, take 1 Grade 12 English in order to determine the appropriate starting level.  Various levels of ESL are offered at the school each semester.

4.  Co-operative Education Program (Co-op): Students participating in the Co-op Program have the unique privilege of learning through experience in the work force.  Co-op puts theory into action and prepares our students for the world of work.  The interview process is completed in our first semester, to determine: 1) the eligibility of the student to participate in the program, 2) what work experience the student would like to initiate and 3) the establishment of a plan of action to achieve the goals that are set.  Deadline for applicants: November 30.

5.  Correspondence Courses:
Redeemer offers a varied and full course selection, but these can be supplemented through the use of both AMDEC courses (Avon Maitland Distance Education Centre), which are on-line and free of charge, and ILC courses (Independent Learning Centre), which offers traditional correspondence courses through the mail.  A charge applies to ILC courses.  Our Guidance Counsellor will register students with either AMDEC or ILC, will monitor their progress and will help them book a final exam.

6.  Resource Program:
Students who have special challenges in meeting the expectations of our program have access to the Resource Program.  This program includes assessment of needs, development of individual education plans in consultation with parents/guardians and teachers, recommendations for program modifications including assistance in writing tests and examinations and completing assignments.  Our Resource Program operates on a first-come first-served basis and is full for the 2010-2011 school year.

7.  Computers: Redeemer has a modern computer lab with 32 brand new computers.  Another seven computers are available in our library.  All computers are networked and connected to the Internet.  Students must sign compliance with the Computer Use Policy.  Use of computers at Redeemer is considered a privilege, which may be withdrawn if students misuse them.  Redeemer students are required to supply their own USB memory stick.

8.  Cafeteria: The school cafeteria is open each lunch hour, Monday to Friday.  Along with an array of healthy snacks and drinks available every day, a meal is available to purchase each of the five days.  Click on Student Life on the top bar and select the cafeteria drop down for more information on our meals and snacks.

9.  School Trips: Redeemer has a regular cycle of class trips every year:

Grade 9's - go on a 2 day orientation session during the second or third week of school in September.  This allows our new students to get to know each other and some of their teachers as well.

Grade 10's - go on a 3 day team-building trip each May. (Spring 2010 - Quebec City)

Grade 11's - go on a 3 day service trip each May.(Spring 2010 - Circle Square Ranch)

Grade 12's - go on a 4 day cultural experience trip in May. (Spring 2010 - New York City)

Since these trips are considered an important part of the program at Redeemer, students are expected to attend.  The details and costs and dates vary from year to year but we try to make all trips as affordable as possible.
